Osborne's speech too political for Treasury website
Chancellor George Osborne gave a speech yesterday setting out plans to restore the public finances and hitting out at his critics as "deficit deniers".
But in making the speech was the Chancellor making remarks that delved too much into party politics for the Treasury’s liking?
The version of the speech which was up on the Treasury website (see screen grab below) contained a curious sub-heading half way down the page which simply read “[POLITICAL CONTENT]”.
Intrigued by this curious insertion Full Fact decided to contact the Treasury to find out what happened.
It seems a segment of the speech as delivered by Mr Osborne yesterday was culled from the version which appeared on the Treasury website, because it was deemed too political.
“It was thought at the time there was content in the speech that was more of a political nature. That is why it was removed,” a spokesperson told us.
Apparently the remarks were made in relation to the record of the previous administration, but beyond that we have not been able to establish what was said.
If anyone has a link to a recording of the full speech so we can find out exactly what the Treasury felt was overly political about the section we would love to hear from you.
