The Times corrects error over nursing job cuts

26 June 2012

Last month Full Fact complained to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) after the Times and the i newspapers printed inaccurate figures over estimated cuts to nursing jobs in the NHS. The i printed a correction but in a manner we weren't satisfied with. Until today, the Times had provided no correction at all.

However the Times has now corrected the mistake online and in print:

Full Fact is obviously delighted that the record has been corrected. The original error occured on page six of the newspaper, so it is a credit to the Times that it has chosen to feature the correction on page two.

During our negotiations via the PCC, the Times made clear that Full Fact's initial communication never made it to the right desk. However once we were put in touch with the right staff the newspaper was very cooperative and promptly offered the correction secured today.

One of the problems we encountered in trying to get in touch with the paper was that there was no obvious address for readers to alert Times staff to errors.

We're therefore equally pleased that the Times has also agreed to make their corrections address more prominent on their website in future. That address is feedback@thetimes.co.uk. Full Fact has also asked the newspaper whether it intends to follow the likes of the Daily Mail and Mirror in featuring all its corrections on the inside cover.

In the meantime, we await the PCC's verdict on whether the i's page two correction of their front-page mistake merits a front-page correction. We will keep you informed as always.
