Election update, 17 April: debates about the debate

17 April 2015

Several of the national newspapers carry coverage of last night's debate between five opposition party leaders. The dynamics of a hung parliament, in which the Labour-SNP relationship could be decisive, preoccupy the GuardianTelegraph and Times.

Expect to hear more of the same from the broadcasters throughout the morning. Our first reaction is here.

The Times also follows up its splash yesterday on the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute Lord Janner, a Labour peer, for alleged sexual offences. That story leads the Independent—we hope to be able to shed some light on it later today.

Ken Clarke and Nigel Farage feature on the front pages of the Mirror and Express, while the Mail and Sun lead on crime.

We'll be continuing our work analysing the main parties' manifestos today, and also getting to grips with the all-important housing issue.

Official statistics on jobs are due to be released within the hour, so we'll be running our collective eye over those as well.
