AI verification training

AI-generated or manipulated content is becoming a fact of life online, and understanding the forms it can take and the skills needed to verify it have become essential tools for any journalist.

I thought it went fantastic with great engagement and questions. As always it's incredibly valuable to have a session on AI generated content especially for our parliamentary staff! With how quickly AI is evolving, it's reassuring to have Full Fact on it and provide great training.

How it works

  • Our AI courses can range from a lunchtime talk to a full-day length course. We also run a general course on verification and using open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools to verify information online, which covers a module in AI verification. If you're looking for the full suite of training on this topic, head to our course page for that.
  • We run these in-person for outlets with rooms available and we also have access to a space in Vauxhall, London, for an extra room-hire cost. For smaller outlets or individuals, we run online courses.
  • We can cater for up to 30 participants for an interactive seminar-style workshop. For larger numbers, we can run a talk with breakout sessions and some interactive elements.
  • Participants only need a laptop to participate. We can also make reasonable adjustments to remove barriers to learning that participants may have, please discuss these with us and we will make every effort to include everyone.

Who this is for

We've helped train hundreds of journalists throughout our time as a charity, and we've been able to tailor workshops to suit organisations of all sizes. These courses are most relevant:

  • If you run a newsroom or team of professional journalists
  • If you're a smaller outlet or charity with a team who want to develop their OSINT skills
  • If you're a freelance journalist or have previously worked in journalism, and you're looking to grow your CV.

We offer discounted rates for charities, and will offer bespoke quotes based on how much training you'd like and the size of your team. Just get in touch through the form at the bottom.

What it covers

We look at the different forms AI information can take, including AI-adjacent topics such as computer-generated imagery (CGI) and digital alteration.

  • We run an overview of OSINT (open-source intelligence) tools which aid investigation of images, video and audio content.
  • We learn how best to use reverse image/video searching and advanced search engine queries to determine the origin of news stories.
  • We look at the capabilities of AI in creating and spreading misinformation and the best techniques available at identifying and debunking AI-generated content.
  • Participants also look at the forms and tactics of those who spread false multimedia content and how to identify the harms they cause.
  • We also cover SynthID - what it is, and how it currently helps journalists to spot potentially generated information.
