Data analysis training

Our data training is all about building confidence. For both beginners and professionals, our courses show you how to make sense of datasets and tell engaging stories about them.

The course did what it said it would - I don't have a fear of data or learning about data anymore and it has given me the confidence to keep learning about data step, by step. Thank you!

No Fear Data - the essential introduction to data analysis

This day-long online course is designed for beginners and people who lack confidence using spreadsheets and datasets. It teaches the basics of spreadsheets and data handling. By the end of the course, you will be able to take any basic dataset, analyse it, and start telling stories about the data.

A typical course runs from 09:30 to 16:00, with a morning break, an hour for lunch, and an afternoon break.

We cover the following skills:

Understanding data

  • Understand basic terminology: “data table” “dataset”, “database”, “CSV”
  • See the different forms that data can take, including: curated tables, pure csv files, online portals, downloadable databases
  • Understand basic data structure and the concepts of data modelling and table joining
  • Identify the difference between good and bad data structures and understand why data is more versatile when structured well

Mastering tables

  • Understand the different kinds of data in tables: absolute, relative and calculated values; numerical, string and Boolean data
  • Learn the basic spreadsheet formulas for analysing data
  • Understand percentages and how to calculate percentage changes
  • Learn how to auto-fill formulas, anchor fixed values, and keyboard shortcuts

Handling datasets

  • Learn how to manipulate whole worksheets of data
  • Learn how to navigate large datasets quickly using keyboard shortcuts and search functions
  • Learn how to get quick summary answers out of datasets

Pivot tables

  • Understand what pivot tables are and the function they serve in allowing large datasets to be summarised and analysed flexibly
  • Understand the requirements on data structure in order to make pivot tables possible and how to make structural corrections if necessary
  • Learn how to create pivot tables and how to extract meaningful answers out of them

Data professional - for mastering data in the workplace

This course is designed for people who use data for their work and want to gain confidence in how to handle, analyse and tell stories about it to colleagues and management.

Trainees will be put at the helm of a fictional company with messy data and learn how to improve and gain new insights from it. By the end of the course, trainees will be able to turn raw, messy data into decision-ready information.

A typical course runs from 09:30 to 16:00, with a morning break, an hour for lunch, and an afternoon break.

We cover the following skills:

Real world data: spotting and fixing the flaws

  • Practice taking a fictional company’s data and learning about its flaws through diagnostic techniques including pivot tables and data visualisations
  • Learn how to resolve flaws in data using data cleanup functions
  • Learn about different forms of good and bad data governance and provision from publicly-available datasets
  • Understand what makes a data publisher trustworthy or untrustworthy

Data in the workplace: telling stories that matter

  • Learn how to analyse workplace datasets including financial data (turnover, profits and forecasting)
  • Learn how to create compelling data visualisations out of the stories you are telling with your data
  • Professionalise your spreadsheets, projects and presentations so that you are telling engaging stories to your audience
