Deciding who and what to trust
Trainees assume the role of “Full Fact Editor” and be tasked with sifting and triaging stories and statistics in the news. We will discuss the qualities and warning signs that make stories and statistics trustworthy or otherwise.
- Finding data and official statistics about the UK
We provide an overview and access guide to the key UK sources of data including the Office for National Statistics, Gov.uk and NHS Digital.
- Live fact checking
We look at fact checking skills directly by asking trainees to live-factcheck a political debate and post conclusions using a private social media account. Trainees learn how to do research quickly and make judgements about how to provide information safely and usefully to their audience.
- Maintaining impartiality and due process
We talk about the unique challenges which face fact checking journalists and campaigners who want to maintain high standards and remain impartial when delivering verdicts. Trainees will be shown how to gauge their own biases and learn how to minimise risk in their work.
- Storytelling with data
Trainees will learn the key principles and techniques for communicating complex or uncertain information in the course of fact checking. We will practice drafting and formatting fact checks so they identify the problem, explain what has gone wrong and deliver a clear and impartial verdict.
