Misinformation response training

Misinformation affects us all, and knowing how to respond to it effectively should be an organisational necessity. We offer training to help businesses, charities and public sector bodies to build information resilience and to expand their own operations in helping the fight against misinformation.

Building your course

Our workshops can range from an hour's lunchtime talk to a full week's programme of training covering everything from the basics of fact checking to how to respond to misinformation outbreaks. Below we outline some of the workshop types we cover.

Short talks

  • For up to 90 minute sessions, we do short workshops on understanding misinformation. These provide an overview of the current global and UK trends in mis- and disinformation.
  • We look at the common themes, tactics and actors who create and spread falsehoods.
  • We introduce the "information ecosystem", helping the organisation we are training to understand the role they play in it, and how they can best help the fight for good information.
  • We look at key strategies organisations can take to pre-empt false information and to plan their options for how to react if they or an issue they care about falls foul of bad information.

Half- or full-day courses

  • Building on the topics covered in short talks, we include interactive activities show organisations how to do media monitoring for misinformation, as well as how to smell that a piece of content might be false or misleading.
  • We also look at how to judge whether sources of information are trustworthy, and cover the basics of the fact checking process for organisations and teams with the capacity to conduct their own research or investigations.
  • For longer sessions, we run live simulations of 'information incidents' to allow teams to practice how they would respond to an outbreak of mis- or disinformation in a subject they work within or care about.

Longer or bespoke courses

  • For organisations with specific needs, we can cover a combination of any of the above, or some of the range of training courses we cover from fact checking and verification to data analysis and critical thinking.
  • We have delivered week-long and eight-day programmes offering organisations the choice of all our courses to fit into the programme. This has also included contributing modules to academic courses for students or journalism fellows.
