What was claimed

An image shows a woman in Iran being fed a spoonful of water before she is stoned to death under Sharia law.

Our verdict

The picture was taken at a protest in Colombia, where the woman allowed herself to be buried in the ground.

A picture claiming to show a woman in Iran being fed a spoonful of water before being stoned to death under Sharia law has been shared numerous times on Facebook.

However, the photo is actually from a 2003 protest in Cali, Colombia, where several people buried themselves in the ground to protest the government failing to relocate displaced persons to a safe area.

The claim has been shared on social media and 4chan in the past. In 2018 Snopes debunked the claim, and identified the woman as then 66-year-old Maria Gabriela Ruiz.
