A picture claiming to show a woman in Iran being fed a spoonful of water before being stoned to death under Sharia law has been shared numerous times on Facebook.
However, the photo is actually from a 2003 protest in Cali, Colombia, where several people buried themselves in the ground to protest the government failing to relocate displaced persons to a safe area.
The claim has been shared on social media and 4chan in the past. In 2018 Snopes debunked the claim, and identified the woman as then 66-year-old Maria Gabriela Ruiz.
This article is part of our work fact checking potentially false pictures, videos and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this—and find out how to report Facebook content—here. For the purposes of that scheme, we’ve rated this claim as false as it incorrectly states that the photo shows a stoning under Sharia law.
