Election update, 24 April: spending plans, an English manifesto and foreign policy
Discussion continues on the economy today, following on from the briefing on the parties' spending plans published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) yesterday. The Conservatives are expected to publish their 'English manifesto', while Ed Miliband will be giving a speech on foreign policy. Meanwhile, we'll be continuing our analysis of the manifestos.
The Times leads with the IFS' analysis of Labour's spending plans, claiming they would lead to a "£1,000 tax on families". The i also calls on party leaders to "tell the truth" after the IFS criticised the "incomplete picture" the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and SNP are giving the electorate on their spending plans.
The Guardian focuses on the Prime Minister's plans today to announce an England-only income tax in an "English manifesto" that is said to target UKIP voters.
The Daily Mail's front page story carries a warning from David Cameron that a Labour government would "bring back uncontrolled immigration." The Prime Minister has written a comment article on the topic within the paper. The Daily Telegraph leads comments by Lord Jones, a former Labour minister who has written an open letter criticising the Labour leader.
Elsewhere, the Independent leads on the European Union's response to human trafficking in the Mediterranean, and features a story on the outgoing Mayor of Tower Hamlets, removed from office for corruption. The Daily Express covers a drop in annuity rates.
