Posts on Facebook have falsely claimed that the retailer Amazon is “giving away” iPads to people aged over 40.
But a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed to Full Fact that these offers are not genuine.
One post says Amazon is “giving away all iPads in 2022-2024” to help “free up warehouses from iPads that have accumulated on warehouses [sic] due to returns or damage to the box” adding that “they are new and fully functional, so the store decided to give them away instead of disposing of them”. Facebook users are then encouraged to follow a link and “answer a few simple questions to find out if you are eligible to receive an iPad”.
We’ve written before about fake Amazon offers we’ve seen shared on social media, and we’ve also written about other fake offers for restaurants, retailers and a range of other brands.
It’s always worth checking if a deal you see on social media has been shared by a company’s official page, which will typically have lots of followers, a verified blue tick on platforms like Facebook or Instagram and a significant post history.
This article is part of our work fact checking potentially false pictures, videos and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this—and find out how to report Facebook content—here. For the purposes of that scheme, we’ve rated this claim as false because Amazon has confirmed this is not a genuine offer.
